BREITLING | BUCHERER EXCLUSIVES
Superocean Heritage B31 Automatic 42
Although Breitling is best known for its aviation instruments, the brand was also an early pioneer in purpose-built dive watches. It entered the category in 1957 with the first Superocean models, which brought style and technical utility to life at sea. Nearly seven decades later, that legacy intersects with another longstanding relationship: the ongoing collaboration between Breitling and Bucherer. Their newest joint release, the Breitling Superocean Heritage B31 42 Automatic Bucherer Exclusive, brings a boutique-only colorway to the latest-generation Superocean lineup while maintaining the clarity, proportion, and functional focus that defined the earliest Superocean models.

The inaugural Superocean models took two forms: the elegant time-only Ref. 1004 and the more technical chronograph Ref. 807. Both demonstrated Breitling’s ability to combine performance with refinement at a time when purpose-built dive watches were still new to the market. The Ref. 1004 was designed for style-conscious wearers, while the Ref. 807 targeted professional divers who relied on absolute visibility beneath the surface.
Both references offered 200-meter water resistance, a notable achievement for the era. Yet their defining traits came from Breitling’s emphasis on legibility and proportion. Drawing on its expertise in building ultra-legible cockpit instruments, the brand equipped the watches with oversized hour markers and distinct javelin and arrow hands, giving the dial an unmistakably modern look while maximizing readability. The rotating bezel featured an unorthodox concave profile that helped protect the crystal and extended slightly beyond the case for easier handling with gloves. Even the 39mm stainless steel case was engineered for comfort, with a slim profile and elongated lugs that allowed the watch to sit flat on the wrist. Together, these elements established the Superocean as a dive watch that balanced technical capability with thoughtful design.

Breitling’s dive watches evolved steadily over the decades, adopting new designs, materials, and technical features as the needs of professional and recreational divers changed. In 2007, the brand returned to its roots with the launch of the Superocean Heritage collection, created to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the original 1957 models. That revival established a bridge between mid-century design and modern performance, and it received a significant update in 2017 with refined proportions, upgraded movements, and more contemporary finishing. Now, in 2025, Breitling has introduced the latest generation of the Superocean Heritage.
The newest generation builds on that foundation with a refreshed silhouette and updated mechanics that carry the collection into its next chapter. The 2025 lineup introduces the B31 manufacture movement to the automatic models, alongside refined case sizes ranging from 36 to 44 millimeters. Proportions have been tightened throughout, most noticeably in shorter lugs, flatter cases, and slimmer, more integrated mesh-metal and mesh-rubber bracelets that taper cleanly into the case. The color palette has been distilled to core shades of black, blue, and green, each paired with a ceramic-inlayed bezel for improved scratch resistance and a crisp, contemporary look. Dial layouts emphasize balance and readability, with pointed indexes, oversized hands, and a discreet date aperture. While modern in execution, the collection preserves the streamlined charm and clarity that defined the maiden Superocean models of the 1950s.
The Superocean Heritage B31 Automatic 42 Bucherer Exclusive sits within this latest generation, distinguished by a colorway developed solely for Bucherer. The watch pairs a stainless-steel case with a black scratch-resistant ceramic bezel, deep blue dial, and black mesh-rubber strap. Like all current Superocean Heritage models, the dial features the signature javelin and arrow hands, a date window at 6 o’clock, and a cambered sapphire crystal. The 200-meter water-resistant case measures 42mm in diameter, 12.03mm in thickness, and 49.55mm lug-to-lug.
Powering the hours, minutes, seconds, and quick-set date functions is the COSC-certified Breitling Manufacture Calibre B31, the brand’s first self-developed three-hand automatic movement launched earlier this year as part of the broader Superocean Heritage refresh. Operating at 28,800 beats per hour and supplying a 78-hour power reserve, the in-house movement is visible through a sapphire caseback. The caseback also bears “Bucherer Exclusive” and “Special Edition” markings, subtly underscoring the collaboration while keeping the overall aesthetic understated.

This exclusive edition demonstrates how adaptable the Superocean concept has been over nearly seventy years. The updated architecture, B31 manufacture movement, and contemporary materials place it firmly within Breitling’s modern portfolio, while the clear dial layout and balanced proportions echo the earliest Superocean references. The Bucherer-specific colorway adds a final layer of distinction without disrupting the line’s design integrity. The Superocean Heritage B31 Automatic 42 is offered exclusively through select Bucherer boutiques worldwide and Bucherer’s online channels.
